On Tuesday May 27 the IRS released information which revealed that thieves were using specific information to gain access to about 100000 taxpayer accounts through the IRS’s Get Transcripts online application. Due to this breach the application has been temporarily shut down. The Get Transcript app is thankfully not hosted on the IRS computer system that handles tax return filing submissions and therefore remains secure.
Both the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) and the IRS’s Criminal Investigation unit are thoroughly examining the matter. The IRS believes the motive behind the breach was made in an attempt for identity theft in the next tax season. All taxpayers who were victim to the hack will be provided with a free credit monitoring service. Additionally the IRS has identified the 200000 targets of the access attempts and have notified these accounts.
